Perennial herbaceous plant, with a very branched stem that can reach 60 centimeters in height. The leaves are oval, with entire margins, opposite two by two, dark green in color. The flowers are small, whitish gathered in panicle inflorescences. Marjoram is a typically Mediterranean plant, it grows spontaneously in sunny soils. It can also be grown in the northern regions, but in this case it is an annual plant.
The crowns placed on the heads of the spouses were intertwined with the marjoram, during wedding ceremonies as a wish for happiness. The ancient Greeks used it both to treat diseases and to prepare perfumes and cosmetics.
The essential oil is extracted from the dried flowering tops by steam distillation. The resulting product is an amber liquid with a slightly camphorized fragrance.
